Sewer and permit rules change at the Potomac River

In Maryland, WSSC is the water and sewer utility and the permit authority for plumbing. It says the owner maintains the sewer service from the property line to the building, and its emergency line is 301-206-4002.

In Virginia, Fairfax County says to call it before a plumber when you think a sewer backup is in the county main. The 24-hour line is 703-323-1211. Gas water heater replacements need a county permit, even like-for-like. The Town of Vienna runs its own water service and has its own urgent line.

The area pages spell out which rule applies where. Start with fixing a damaged sewer lateral if a backup is the problem.

Four places that need a note before you call

  • Glen Hills, MD: most homes use wells and septic, which this site does not service, so the page explains where a plumber's work stops.
  • Cabin John, MD: its ZIP codes are 20818, 20817 and 20812, so give your street address and we confirm.
  • Great Falls, VA: much of its land lies outside the county sewer area, so septic and well work is out of scope.
  • Vienna, VA: the Town runs water and most sewer mains, while Fairfax County handles plumbing permits.

Each of those pages explains the point in full and links back here.
